Books & Plans

June 30th, 2008 by monnibo

I’m reluctant to share this one… because I’m selfish and greedy and all that… but I suppose I shall (now that I’ve claimed 2 books). The Book Expo took place in Toronto two weeks ago, and Lex is hosting the Mini Book Expo for Bloggers.

The motto: Claim it ~ Read it ~ Blog it! (Note: This is open to Canadians only because Lex got a couple Canadian companies to sponsor the shipping costs).

Buy A Friend A Book Week occurs the first weeks of every January, April, July, and October. In Spring it is the Dawn is hosting a giveaway from her “re-homing pile”. Let her know I sent you and tell her which book you’re interested in reading!

Other book giveaways include: 14 Book Giveaway for up to 5 lucky winners. It including fiction, history, memoirs, and romance titles for a whole summer’s supply of reading from Hachette Group. Visit Trish at Hey Lady! Whatcha reading…? to enter! Tell her I sent you! (USA & Canada only).

Zazazu, the host of the Thrift Shop Thrift Swap that I made a button for, asked me if I wouldn’t mind making another button for her Fresh Start Promise Giveaway. I just wanted to let you guys know in case you’re interested (Don’t enter me in the giveaway! It wouldn’t be fair.)

KNITTING

I have many hobbies, and I definitely go through “phases”… sometimes I’m completely fine with not knitting for about 3 months, and other times I can barely put it down. (As you probably noticed by my blogging material, it’s the former at the moment). However, that doesn’t mean that I enjoy my hobby any less! Just like scrapbooking, I don’t do it often, but I enjoy it immensely when I do!

Here are some of my favourite FOs (Finished Objects):

The Origins of Henry

June 25th, 2008 by monnibo

Why is your cat named “Sir Henry McSquishington Fluffybutt”?

Sir — because he is truly a spoiled prince
McSquishington — a nod to our “Scottish heritage” as well as describing his best trait: being squishy
Fluffybutt — pretty self explanatory… it’s super fluffy!

But why “Henry?”

Well, when we first got him, as a kitten, he looked like this:

And I was obsessed with Paul Newman (still am) who looked like this:

Well Paul Newman is just so handsome with his gorgeous blue eyes, and his manly-yet-impish grin, and the kitten had blue eyes too!

I suggested Henry and it fit all the requirements:

  • Mom wanted a boy kitten. Check.
  • Dad wanted 2 syllables, ending in an “EEEE” sound. Check.
  • My sister named the last cat. (Not that that was really any reason why I picked this name, but a number of names floated around).

But wait! Shouldn’t that mean his name is “Paul”?

No silly! Henry Gondorff was Paul Newman’s character in The Sting – my favourite Paul Newman film!

10 Inventions That Make Life Easier

June 24th, 2008 by monnibo

  1. The internet — Instantaneous answers, anywhere in the world, anytime of day. Amazing!
  2. Cell phones — Constantly in contact. Easy to get a hold of everyone.
  3. Can opener – I hate those old-fashioned bottle-opener kind. Can’t work ‘em.
  4. Scissors — Have you ever tried cutting paper with a knife? I wouldn’t recommend it.
  5. Tape dispenser — the ones with the serrated edge. Scotch tape is impossible without a serrated edge.
  6. Showers (Indoor plumbing) — I hate having baths. I call them “stewing in your own filth”.
  7. Tupperware — I love having leftovers. None of the work and all of the taste!
  8. Washing Machine (and Dryer) – they go together, as a unit… and I love them! Some of my clothes (sweaters, nylons, etc) I have to wash by hand and it is so time consuming! I love the washer & dryer.
  9. The Printing Press & now Digital Printing — I got to learn all about the Publishing Process in my last program and it was really fascinating how far we’ve come and how widespread the written word really can get!
  10. Airplanes — I wouldn’t ever get to see my boyfriend in England if there were no airplanes. Heck, I never would have met him!
