The Lady Elizabeth by Alison Weir (book review)

The Lady Elizabeth by Alison Weir

I finished The Lady Elizabeth a few weeks ago and haven’t been able to muster a review. I think it’s a little bit of ambivalence; I enjoyed the book, but it lagged a bit in places. I read Innocent Traitor by Alison Weir a few years ago and remember really enjoying it. I love historical fiction and the fact that Weir began as a historian and has now delved into storytelling is very appealing. Even at age two, Elizabeth is keenly aware that people in the court of her father, King Henry VIII, have stopped referring to her as “Lady Princess” and now call her “the Lady Elizabeth.” Before she is three, she learns of the tragic fate that has befallen her mother, the enigmatic and seductive Anne Boleyn, and that she herself has been declared illegitimate, an injustice that will haunt her. What comes next is a succession of stepmothers, bringing with them glimpses of love, fleeting security, tempestuous conflict, and tragedy. The death of her father puts the teenage Elizabeth in greater peril, leaving her at the mercy of ambitious and unscrupulous men. Like her mother two decades earlier she is imprisoned in the Tower of London–and fears she will also meet her mother’s grisly end. Power-driven politics, private scandal and public gossip, a disputed succession, and the grievous example of her sister, “Bloody” Queen Mary, all cement Elizabeth’s resolve in matters of statecraft and love, and set the stage for her transformation into the iconic Virgin Queen. Vancouver Trash 2 Treasure Fibre Swap

Vancouver's Trash 2 Treasure Fibre Swap

Come out next weekend, Saturday, October 2, 2010 at Marpole-Oakridge Community Centre from 1:00-3:00 pm and swap all your unwanted/unneeded/unloved fibre goodies! Anything knitting/crochet/spinning related is welcome (books, yarn, spinning fibre, hooks/needles, spindles, etc.). I cannot take credit for the idea, nor can I take credit for the organization… but I chimed in when they asked for suggestions, and I designed the banner/badge. This is a really unique idea because there will be one free-for-all area for items that you just want to see gone, and then another arrangement for items you want to swap. There are some specific rules, but it’s going to be a learning curve as well. For all the details, visit the Trash2Treasure Ravelry Group or the Facebook Event.

The Word On The Street Vancouver

As some of you may know, I work for a company that produces events. The Word On The Street, Vancouver’s book and magazine festival is one of those events. This week is pretty busy and the office is super messy with production in full swing. If I seem quiet on my personal accounts, follow us on Twitter (our festival tag is #WOTSVAN10), read the blog, or “Like” us on Facebook. I’ll be in all those places promoting the festival! Anyway, with the festival coming up, I thought I’d tell all my local friends to come down on Sunday, September 26 to Library Square and CBC Plaza. The festival is completely free, goes on rain or shine, from 11:00 am to 5:00 pm. There are author readings, magazine demos, panel talks, poetry readings, writing and publishing discussions, kids events, storytelling, exhibitors galore, and visual exhibits and demonstrations. If I was a regular festival-goer (and/or could be in more than one place at a time) I would check out the following events: Panel: The Changing Face of Publishing [Writing Talks] Panel: Writing for Youth [Kids, Tweens & Teens Tent] Carolyn Herriot, Zero Mile Diet: A Year-Round Guide to Growing Organic Food [Canada Writes Tent] Norman Watt, Off The Beaten Path: A Hiking Guide to Vancouver’s North Shore [Canada Writes Tent] Francis Mansbridge, Vancouver Then and Now [Authors Tent] BC Book Arts Guild’s book-making demos (particularly handmade paper) [Library Promenade] Western Living Magazine — 10 Ways to Add Wow to Any Room with [...]

Hope you all had a great Book Blogger Appreciation Week. I was so happy to be involved with the design for BBAW and sorry I wasn’t able to participate more. Congratulations to all the nominees, winners, giveaway recipients, and big thanks to the whole BBAW Committee! P.S. Sorry I haven’t been around much — but lots of reading has been happening, I assure you! Expect some reviews soon-ish.

FO: Malabrigo Rasta Scarf

Malabrigo Rasta Scarf

This was probably the quickest knit I’ve ever made, even counting the two times I ripped half of it out. The pattern is the Super-Fast, Ultra-Cozy Scarf by Jen Reilly [Ravelry link]. It called for US 19 (15mm) and CO 10 stitches, but I used US 15 (10mm) needles which worked fine. Also, I tried casting on 10 stitches and it seemed too skinny. I ripped it out and cast on 12 and it didn’t seem to make a difference, so I cast on 14 and it seems great. I really liked the colour-mixing that was happening with only 10 stitches, and it pools a little more than desireable at 14 stitches, but at knit night both wenchlette and yarnpiggy said that it won’t matter once it’s on my neck. The scarf itself is a little bit on the short side (due to the extra 4 stitches) but it still makes a nice cozy knot at my chin. I was inspired by yarnpiggy’s Instant Gratification scarf made from Mal Rasta. I fell in love with it so much I went out to find the same colourway. I’m not quite 100% happy with the more muted tones of my skein, but they’re still beautiful. View my Rasta Scarf on my Ravelry project page.
