Festival season kicks off: Looking forward to…

In the next two weeks there is an extraordinary number of community events taking place. Guess that means summer festival season is underway. Why I will be at SlutWalk Vancouver today

The very first SlutWalk happened in April of this year in Toronto, but it has since taken local, national and even international media by storm. SlutWalks are popping up all over major cities in Canada, USA and across Europe in response to victim-blaming. SlutWalk Toronto is a rally that began in response to the victim-blaming that occurs throughout society in response to rape and sexual abuse. The tipping point was when Constable Michael Sanguinetti of the Toronto Police Service advised women at York University to “not dress like sluts” to avoid getting sexually assaulted. Promote Literacy: Donate your unwanted books

Did you know1 that: Among working age Canadians, 3 million (14.6%) struggle with very serious literacy challenges. They have difficulty with even the most basic written materials. Another 5.8 million (27%) can work with print information but not well. More than half of Canadians (55%) do not have the minimum numeracy skills necessary to meet the information demands of today’s world.
