Adventures in Solitude by Grant Lawrence (book review)

Grant Lawrence recounts his childhood memories and family’s history at their Cabin in Desolation Sound. Mixed in are historical accounts from Captain George Vancouver, who gave the area its name, and tales of adventure and tragedy of the pioneers and European settlers to the area. Entertaining, witty, and revealing, Grant is able to reflect on his own personal experiences as well as his reaction to others’. Sacré Bleu by Christopher Moore (book review)

Christopher Moore is one of my favourite humourists for his satirical wit, wry tone, and intelligent material. When I first read A Dirty Job about death and soul-collecting in San Francisco, I laughed myself to tears. Since then (2008) I have also read Fool and Bloodsucking Fiends, both which I enjoyed, but neither topped A Dirty Job. I recently finished Moore’s latest work, Sacré Blue: A Comedy d’Art (published April 2012). Christopher Moore is a hilarious fiction writer. The first novel of his I read, A Dirty Job, had me laughing out loud. Then I picked up Fool, a satirical comedy loosely based on Shakespeare’s King Lear, which I also enjoyed.
