BookCamp Vancouver 2009

BookCamp Vancouver 2009

The inaugural BookCamp Vancouver was organized by Monique Trottier of Boxcar Marketing, Nick Bouton of Protagonize.com, Sean Cranbury of Books on the Radio, John Maxwell of SFU’s publishing program, and Morgan Cowie from BookNet Canada. BookCamp Vancouver was an incredible experience! It took place on Friday October 16, 2009 and there was so much to absorb! I wasn’t able to make it to every event that I wanted to because there were four events going on at a time. The great thing about BookCamp is it was organized as an “unconference”; instead of having a speaker or a lecture, the person was more of a moderator or host. Grab a cup of something warm and get comfy, this post is a long one!

How many F’s are there?

Count how many times the letter F occurs in the following sentence: FROZEN FOODS ARE THE RESULT OF YEARS OF SCIENTIFIC STUDY AND THE DEVELOPMENT OF REFRIGERATION. . . . . . . . . . . . How many did you count? Write it in the comments for me. Now, scroll down to find out how many there are. Sorry this is so odd but it’s hard to not reveal the answer doing this in a blog.

Random House Children’s Books

Here’s the semi-detailed account of my week of Work Experience at Random House Children’s Books in the Editorial Department. Every day I woke up at about 6:20am and got into the shower. Then I got dressed, had breakfast, and left by 7:15am. 25 minutes to walk to the train station and get the 07:52 train to King’s Cross. 20 minutes on the train, then once in King’s Cross battle with the crowds to get into the Underground. 10 minutes on the Victoria line (more like 15 with the morning rush) to get to Oxford Circus. Switch to the Central Line and catch a train to Ealing Broadway. It had to be to Ealing Broadway as that is the end of one line, and a few stops before the tracks split. 35 minutes on the tube to Ealing Broadway. It’s about 9:10am by the time I get to Ealing; 10 minute walk to RH, and I’m there for 9:30am as requested. Lather, rinse, and repeat at 5:30pm; I get home about 7:30pm. The building! (Actually the Children’s Books was beside it at 57 – 59, but I didn’t know that until I walked into the reception at 61 – 63) Transworld is an imprint of Random House Group. This means different “brands” under the main title. Monday Read through “slushpile” manuscripts. These are unsolicited submissions, and as RH acquires most of their new titles through literary agents, I wrote rejection letters to most of them. Wrote rejection letters. This was difficult [...]

“Write constantly, as though your life depended on it.”

She stepped up to the podium ready to impress them all. Rows of students dotted the horizon and directly in front of her sat the professors. She froze. Looking to the professors, she licked her lips then pressed them together anxiously. The Dean glanced at his watch. She shuffled her notes and cleared her throat; thoughts were going 90 miles an hour through her mind. Her cough echoed through the auditorium on the microphone. The clock ticked. The students glanced at each other in confusion, expecting something. Anything. Speak, she willed her voice. Say something, she told herself. “Good Afternoon,” the words rang out from the speakers dotting the walls. Keep talking. “I’m here to speak to you about love, sex, life, and relationships.” Her eyes darted to her cue cards, instinctually moving the front card to the rear. “I do not claim to be an expert on the matter, in fact, I don’t believe this to be possible. I only intend to share with you what I know.” Give them the fine print. “If this was not the lecture you were expecting; if you wanted an older, wiser individual, you’re welcome to leave. The first thing I tell myself in the morning is that you don’t have to do anything you don’t want to. So if you don’t want to spend the next hour in this lecture hall with me, you can leave and no one will hold it against you.” She glanced aprehensively at the professors. The man [...]
