Topic of the Week #2: Magazines

Q: Do you subscribe to any magazines (knitting or otherwise)? Or do you prefer to purchase magazines at the newstand? Do you subscribe online to any knitting magazines/newsletters? What does a knitting magazine need to have to catch your fancy and get you to fork out that well-earned cash? I don’t subscribe to any magazines at the moment. I sometimes purchase magazines, rarely knitting ones. The patterns just don’t draw me in. Although occasionally I really like Simply Knitting’s free gifts! hehe. The thing that bugs me about knitting magazines (and most craft magazines) is that I can’t flip through them (like I can with books at the bookstore). So I’m more inclined to purchase a book despite it costing more than a magazine, just because I can flip through beforehand and see if I really like it. I like to know that it’s worth my money. Right now I’m lusting over the Cables & Aran Stitch by from Harmony. I love stitch dictionaries! That’s why I bought “How to Knit” by Debbie Bliss.

UK Swap Questionnaire

Oops! I suppose as the host and main organizer of the UK Swap, it would sortakinda be a good idea actually do mine! Oh and if there is anyone from the swap visiting — they questionnaires are due on Monday January 28th! Warning: “home” or “Canada” refers to Vancouver, BC, Canada … where I was born, raised, and until recently, lived. Part One: Crafting Do you knit, crochet, or both? Knit. Only. But I would looove to learn to crochet to “embellish” my knitted items! What do you like to make? Do you have a favourite project? I’m terrible with big projects, or things that take too long. I don’t think I could handle a sweater, too many stitches, or socks because I’d get Second Sock Syndrome. I don’t often make the same thing twice either! I liked my hat, my hot water bottle cosy, felt clogs, toys. Do you have a favourite type of fiber or brand of yarn? I love organic/dyed cotton by Blue Sky Alpacas. I love alpaca, llama, and anything squishy. I recently learned about a yarn here called Artegano Aran that I like too. I’ve never seen it before! Do you have a least favourite type of yarn? I don’t knit socks so I prefer an aran/DK weight instead of a sock or lace weight. I’m not a big wool fan, or anything scratchy or itchy. Do you do any other crafts? I sew and make jewellery (earrings mainly). I would love to learn to [...]

UK Swap Weekly Topic #1

I know sign-ups haven’t even ended for the UK Swap, but they’ve slowed down so much and they end on Monday, so for the coming week there will be something happening! I’ve started Topics of the Week (thanks for the idea Anne & Holly – Winter Wonderland Coffee Swap) Q: With 2008 in full-swing, do you have any knit-years resolutions you are trying to keep to? Stash-busting? Knitting just for yourself? Gift-alongs or starting Christmas knitting early? Do your knit-years resolutions affect your other resolutions? Such as watching your spending, or putting yourself first, or even loosing weight (yarn weight….)? I want to be a “fearless knitter” and try lace, and big projects which I’ve not been inspired to begin before. I do want 2008 to be “me” knitting, but I know that it won’t always end up that way. I want to finish what I start without leaving it to hibernate for too long. My knitting resolutions can sort of relate to my regular resolutions — I don’t want to leave things unfinished.

Things are getting back to normal

Is everyone else still recovering from the bump and jostle of the holidays? I have to admit, it’s just getting back to normal in my mind. I will also admit that it is currently 10 days into the new year and I have not even touched my knitting needles. *gasp. shock. fall over* I didn’t even finish CW’s present for Christmas. *sigh*. Things can been continuing in Blogland though. I’ve been working on that “secret html project”. I promise that all will be revealed soon — hopefully by this weekend. I’m a little disappointed that I didn’t sign up for the Cocoa Swap, but I suppose organizing the UK Swap will take up enough of my time. Especially but the sounds of what Michelle has gone through. Cass has been pondering the act of knitting. I honestly hear people talk about “connecting to knitters and artisans in the past” but I don’t see it. I just don’t feel it. Sharon is on the mend, pneumonia is a biatch, ain’t it? Ooh is this starting to tread on Anne‘s Sunday Bloglines toes? Speaking of bloglines (it reminds me of RSS feeds) I am using Shrook quite competently… and I am always amused when it updates itself and checks something and then a new post pops up! It’s great. It’s like a blogger’s Christmas! Speaking of swaps and whatnot… I finally found time to draw the winner and post it on the UK Swap blog with photos. Congratulations Knit-Knacker! Did you guys [...]
