Chinchilla Whiskers

100% willow wood wicker balls (from Pier1)

(Better late than never! It’s not yet midnight here, so it’s still technically Whiskers on Wednesday.) I made a quick trip earlier this week to Pier1 for home décor items… but not for me, for Chico. When I was in Salisbury, England, I stopped by a pet store and found these 100% willow wood, woven wicker balls (isn’t that a tongue-twister!). Willow is a chin-safe wood and they came in a natural, untreated version (as well as a blanched and flavour/colour). I bought one for Chico and brought it home in January (earlier this year). When I presented the willow ball to Chico, he literally devoured it! It took him less than 24 hours, and he absolutely loved the thing. I have since been searching for them in Vancouver because I refuse to pay $5 per ball at the local pet store (he devours them too quickly). Then, I discovered them for $3 each on Pier1′s website! I have made Chico such a happy boy: Please excuse the really crappy photos. Whenever I went over to the cage with the camera, he ignored the willow ball and paid attention to me. Of course I couldn’t resist giving him a scratch, but I then had to try and take photos on the sly! P.S. I gave him the first willow ball on Sunday night. Tonight, Wednesday, as I type, he is chewing the very last bit of it (the part still tied to the top of the cage in the bottom [...]

On the Move, On the Mend

Henry sitting in a box

As some of you may already know, I moved apartments on Friday. I decided to hire movers because it wasn’t a treat moving the first time (May 2009 out of my parent’s house) and I’ve certainly acquired more stuff since then. The movers arrived on time, and came recommended, but I felt really bad because their boss, (to whom I’d explained all the details about my current location, amount of stuff, type of furniture, and my future apartment) had gone on vacation and didn’t convey any of this. Poor guys were sprung with the second floor of a walk-up, a giant armoire, 2 bookshelves and boxes upon boxes of books, among other things. It really made me realize how much stuff I really have. I still had one box from moving back in May 2009 that I hadn’t unpacked. I don’t know what to do about all the stuff — it’s all in my new apartment now and I have so much space to organize that it doesn’t seem like that much anymore. But I know that one person doesn’t need so much stuff; I read something once that said if you didn’t use it within 12 months, you should get rid of it. Yikes! Anyway, my new place is great — second floor, south-facing, and two small balconies. It’s an older unit which has positives and negatives. I love the original hardwood flooring, and because it’s older the rent isn’t astronomical. But it’s got single-glazed windows and there is [...]

General Random Stuff

Sit down, grab a coffee, because here are some quick updates all at once. Some don’t need individual blog posts, some are long-overdue updates. On Thanksgiving Monday, a few knitters met up and then made a trip to Daiso in Richmond. It’s a ginormous Japanese dollar store. Everything is $2, so some things are a bit expensive while others are dirt cheap. I got lots of awesome goodies and didn’t spend too-too much. I got a lovely little taper vase and some fridge magnets. I also got a magnetic pen holder for my fridge, super useful! I’ve joined the Festivus Swap on our local Ravelry meetup group. Must shop and knit for my secret person… so won’t be knit-blogging for a bit cause it’s a secret! I’ve signed up for a beginner quilting class at Spool of Thread. Looking forward to it mucho mucho! My parents’ kitten is named Abby. We went through a few names in her first two days (including Cookie, Penny/Penelope, and I suggested Moo Cow). But Abby seems to suit her. I sewed her a blanket pad like Henry’s yellow one. Her’s is brown because it goes with my mom’s decor. Pics when she’s settled in. I went to a talk at the Vancouver International Writers & Readers Festival (VIWF) which included Emma Donoghue and Kathleen Winter, both of whom I’ve read their books. Emma Donoghue wrote Room, which I finished reading but haven’t yet blogged about. Kathleen Winter wrote Annabel, which I’ve read, reviewed, and [...]

New Addition to the Family

Mom & Dad's new kitten

For this Whiskers on Wednesday, I would like to introduce you to the newest member of our family. My mom and dad got a kitten: Her name is probably going to be Georgi, although they just brought her home last night so they’re not positive that it’s the perfect name for her. She’s 5 months old and was adopted from the Vancouver SPCA. Her name was originally Bonnie, which is also my sister’s name (so we obviously couldn’t keep it for the cat). Georgi is very curious and affectionate. She is playful and alert, yet cuddly, which is what my mom wanted. More news in coming weeks I’m sure! Then on the way home I encountered a coyote! It isn’t that uncommon in this area due to all the big parks and provincial forests, but it’s still nuts to see. I managed to get some photos of the poor guy, and then s/he tried to cross the busy street. Fortunately when I looped back to check he’d already made it across the street.

Video: Cat Meets Bunny

I compiled this from video clips I took on the second day of Pancake’s visit. Henry is a little better but still doesn’t like when the bunny hops straight at him. P.S. You know how YouTube suggests similar videos to watch? You have to see these! Cute overload!!
