Bicycling Deas Island Regional Park

August 3rd, 2010 by monnibo | Out & About, Personal, Photos / Videos

Last Friday my mom and I went for a bike ride on Deas Island Regional Park. Highway 99 decends in Delta on Deas Island and travels under the Fraser River to emerge in Richmond. Whenever I return to Vancouver, just before we go into the George Massey Tunnel, we pass over Deas Slough. Deas Slough always looks so picturesque, quiet, and beautiful despite the highway running right through it.

Take a look at all my photos from the bike ride on Flickr.

The only downside to this beautiful day was that my car died inexplicably during the drive home (thankfully before we got to Highway 99 and the George Massey Tunnel).

I’d love to do that ride. I tried, in fact…then noticed that cycling was *prohibited* on all the trails. I can ride miles of trails in Richmond, Vancouver, Burnaby, Coquitlam etc…but not in Delta. So I now spend my time(and money) elsewhere. Your loss, Delta.

It was quite a short ride and there were lots of sandy trails. It looks like it can get quite a high tide on the Fraser River side. I think they don’t *recommend* biking it, and I can see why (due to the quality of the trails). We saw a handful of other cyclists, however I would recommend walking it, just as it seems more enjoyable.

Funny how they don’t choose to use signage, either. I had to read a brochure out of one of their information kiosks to discover that bike weren’t allowed (it’s also in the fine print on their website).

Want a really nice ride, suitable for kids and older folks? Try the Colony Farms trails; literally miles of them, all flat. Creeks, rivers, bridges, ponds, wildlife…something for everyone. Nice clean Porta-Potties with hand-washing facilities in the parking lot, too.
