Counting Down…

Bet you thought this post was going to be about Christmas with a title like “Counting Down…” Yes, I realize Christmas is only one week away, and tomorrow is the last night of Hannukah. But what I’m looking forward to is this Sunday. In a mere two days I will be hopping on a plane (with the upset, non-striking BA flight crew) and heading to Jolly Ol’ England for five weeks! It will be my fifth winter spent with my boyfriend and his family. During January, I will be travelling around England. My logic: I have been going to England for five years and have seen lots of London and Manchester, but not much else. So I am going to take the train around England and see some stuff! I’m sure I’ll keep you all posted via the blog and various social networking sites. Hope you all have a very happy holiday season! And with that, I leave you with a video of the Dancing Lights from VanDusen Gardens:

New Best Friend

Henry, my cat, sleeps beside the radiator

I’m living in a basement suite, which was fantastic when we had a heat wave this summer. But now that the temperature is dropping, these cement walls aren’t so comforting. Since the upstairs neighbours control the central heating, and the baseboard heaters are hidden behind furniture, I brought out the trusty radiator! It heated up the apartment nicely, and quickly became Henry’s new best friend! Unfortunately he kept waking up whenever he heard me turn on the camera (such a little camera wh0re!) so I didn’t get some of the cuter photos. But later, I decided to put his blanket pad beside the heater for him. He loves it so much!

Knitter’s Festivus

My Festivus Swap gifts

Last week I told you all about the Knitter’s Festivus Miracle Swap. We had a lovely dinner, lots of fun exchanging gifts, and I had included photos of the FO I gifted to Kyrsten. I have been amiss about posting photos from the dinner as well as my gift from Shelby! Better late than never….. Shelby knit me this incredibly long scarf (can wrap 3 times around my neck) out of Cascade 220 (I think). I was knitting a secret Christmas gift with Cascade 220 and I swear it is the same colourway! And that is some lovely Scottish Breakfast Tea, I’ve only tried English Breakfast so I have been enjoying this in the mornings. Here’s a stitch close-up for the knitter’s out there. And some lovely photos from the dinner:

I can haz yarnz!

My Dressew yarn haul

Dressew is the best place in town to go if you’re a sewer/crafter, however, the selection of yarn (at $1.99/ball) has always been low-quality. It’s fantastic if you need eyelash, novelty yarn, or acyrlic for your project. But this weekend, rumours began to fly around the knitting community that there was good yarn at Dressew, quality yarn. Since I work in the same block as Dressew (it takes great willpower), I popped in on Monday to see if it was worth the fuss. Let this photo be your answer: You make think I went overboard (you’re not a knitter are you?) but for $1.99/ball, there is no “overboard”, there is only good deals! For the knitters who want the details, here are the yarn names and links to my Stash on Ravelry: Nashua Creative Focus Worsted [brilliant blue] Nashua Creative Focus Chunky [turquoise] Nashua Handknits Wooly Stripes [light blues] [blue-purple] Nashua Handknits Snowbird [teal-grey stripes] Nashua Creative Focus Kid Mohair [purple] [fushia] Nashua Handknits Ivy [pink-sparkle] [purple-sparkle] These yarns are all wool, alpaca, mohair… quality fibres. They also had superwash wool and other great yarns. I haven’t heard of Nashua Handknits before… but I’m not complaining! Now… off to look at my faves and queue some great patterns in Ravelry!

Red: A Haida Manga by Michael Nicoll Yahgulaanas (book review)

RED: A Haida Manga by Michael Nicoll Yagulanaas

Michael Nicoll Yahgulaanas (MNY) is the creator of a new style of graphic novel, Haida Manga. Haida Manga combines First Nations’ art style and tales with the Japanese graphic novel form of manga. MNY uses his distinct style of art to bring Haida Gwaii tales to life. Haida art is very distinct and popular in Northwest art. The Haida people live in the Queen Charlotte Islands off the coast of British Columbia. Red: A Haida Manga, published by Douglas & McIntyre, is based on an oral Haida narrative about Red and his sister Jaada, both orphans. “When raiders attack their village, Red, still a boy, escapes dramatically. But Jaada is whisked away. The loss of Jaada breeds a seething anger, and Red sets out to find his sister and exact revenge on her captors.” I read Red: A Haida Manga all in one sitting. As I admired the watercolour illustrations and the unconventional layout of the pages, I felt I was almost missing something in translation. Each page was such a beautiful work of art with minimal dialogue or narration. Because there wasn’t a clear cut “panel 1, panel 2, panel 3, panel 4″ format, I had trouble following the story’s details. I have read another story by MNY, The Flight of the Hummingbird, a parable for the environment. This had a more conventional layout and I feel that helped me grasp the morals of the story better. One really neat thing about Red is at the end, MNY gives [...]
