The Law of Nines by Terry Goodkind (book review)

The Law of Nines by Terry Goodkind

CW got me interested in Terry Goodkind’s Sword of Truth Series which concluded a couple years ago after eleven books. When we heard that Goodkind was going to be writing a new book not related to the Sword of Truth world, we were excited but apprehensive. Turns out we didn’t even need to be: The Law of Nines is related to the Sword of Truth story. (Let me make my point before I get into what I thought of the book and story.) Here is a quote from Terry Goodkind in a letter to the fans: I’m tremendously excited to at last have the opportunity to write stories set in this, our world, in the here and now. …  It has always been my desire to write contemporary novels and many of you have told me how eager you are for those kinds of stories. That time has come. I am confident that you will recognize my unique voice in the new books and that you will feel right at home. Except, perhaps, you may now be afraid to turn out the lights when you go to bed. I am not disappointed by the book but I feel that it was miscategorized by being called “fiction – thriller”. There was a large element of fantasy once the main female character was introduced, despite being set in the present of our world. Because you suspend belief with a fantasy novel, you don’t get the same reaction as a pure thriller. Overall [...]

He’s Watching Me…

Henry, my cat, being "lumpy" on the floor

Whenever Henry totally relaxes and just vegges out on the carpet, he lies on his back and tends to just watch me. Then he’s start meowing and moaning until I talk to him. (If he doesn’t want attention he goes elsewhere.) Here’s some fantastic poses of Mister Pudgey chilling out. This was taken from my seat on the couch. (Please excuse the background mess) This is the chair beside the couch (with his blanket pad). P.S. He’s watching me and lying like this as I type……

Totally Amazing Glass!! experience

Glassblowing at Circle Craft Christmas Market

Yesterday I had the chance at Circle Craft Christmas Market to take part in glass blowing with Malcolm Macfadyen. On Thursday I hung out at the Totally Amazing Glass!! stage and watched while some other students participated in the Ballz of Fire!! workshops. I have been working with Circle Craft on their social media and blogging and they suggested I try the glass blowing workshop. [Click here to view the blog post I made about Totally Amazing Glass!! at Circle Craft] Here I am heating the glass on the blow pipe in the Glory Hole of the furnace. We started with a clear blob of molten glass that moved like honey.

Circle Craft Christmas Market

Circle Craft Christmas Market 2009

Wednesday marked the beginning of the 36th Annual Circle Craft Christmas Market. This is a fantastic event with over 265 artisans from coast to coast. With hundreds of different talents, these artisans range from glass blowers, to chefs, to fashion designers, to jewellery makers, and onwards. I get so inspired browsing through the market and seeing all the different exhibitors. I have a hard time picking a favourite part, but I think that what sets Circle Craft apart is their show features — there are glass blowing demonstrations, an entertainment stage with musical and dance acts, and new for 2009, wood turning demonstrations. Today I went to the market and watched both wood turning and glass blowing demonstrations. Tomorrow I’m getting the chance to participate in the glass blowing workshops — Ballz of Fire!! — where we get to make a Christmas glass ball. I’m very excited! My dad is joining me at the market tomorrow morning, and then in the evening I’m meeting up with the knitters to go back to the market.

Too Much Happiness by Alice Munro (book review)

Too Much Happiness by Alice Munro (book cover)

I chose to read Too Much Happiness because (to my knowledge) I haven’t read anything by Alice Munro before. I’ve been told that her novels are extremely well-written, but decided to start with her latest book of short stories. I picked up the book one evening before bed and started to read the first story. I had to put it down before I finished because I needed to go to sleep; but when I picked it up next, I stormed right through the story. As it ended, I turned the page expecting the next chapter in this intriguing character’s story. I was oddly disappointed to be reminded that this book was short stories. I took the time to go back and reread the last page of the first story and let the finality of it sink it. This happened with countless stories in Too Much Happiness — I didn’t want to let the characters go. Someone told me that they weren’t an Alice Munro fan because all of her characters were middle-aged white folks who were of average-income. I could totally understand the point this person made — coming from an ethnic background. However, I ended up getting so immersed in the characters thoughts, feelings, and life that I didn’t care what colour they were, how old, or how well-off. It was the character’s motivations (not their physical descriptions) that stuck with me. I also really liked the stories placed in BC, bringing them close to home and all the [...]
