Red Dog, Red Dog by Patrick Lane (book review)

red-dog-red-dog

Honestly, I don’t know what all the fuss was about. This book took me a long time to get through and I wasn’t particularly enraptured with the story. The prose is quite poetic, and it is definitely character driven, but right off the bat I felt like there were too many characters. By halfway through the book we’re whittled down to just a handful, but by that time I was bored. I picked it up because Patrick Lane is a well-known BC writer, and Red Dog, Red Dog became a National Bestseller and was nominated for several awards. The synopsis on McClelland & Stewart’s website just gushes about it: Red Dog, Red Dog is set in the mid-1950s, in a small town in the interior of B.C. in the unnamed Okanagan Valley. The novel focuses on the Stark family, centring on brothers Eddy and Tom, who are bound together by family loyalty and inarticulate love. There is Tom and Eddy’s father, Elmer Stark, a violent man with a troubled past, and Lillian, who married as a girl to escape life on the farm with her widowed mother, and now retreats into her own isolation. Unrepentant, bitter, older brother Eddy speeds freely along, his desperate path fuelled by drugs and weapons, while Tom, a loner, attempts to conceal their secrets and protect what remains of the family. Eventually, an unspeakable crime causes him to come face to face with something traumatic that has lain hidden in him since he was a [...]

I need/want a vacation/adventure

Things are getting busy here. I’ve got a lovely snotty cold, and work is very busy gearing up for The Festival. I’ve been reading and knitting and fixing up my place more to keep myself sane, but I’ve been having mini-panic attacks. Well, not panicy so much as feelings of despair. I’m loving my job, and the apartment, and living on my own… but some days/weeks it feels like all I do is go to work 9-5, cook dinner, clean up afterwards, and then I’m too tired to do anything else. I’ve gained several pounds this summer due to pure exhaustion, and I have no muscles to speak of. I’m sorry to bellyache here, especially after a week of quietness. But it’s my blog right? The summer hasn’t been a total bust. I love the job I’m doing … well the end result at least. It’s the 9-5 that’s bearing down on me. We’ve had lots of fun — my boyfriend and I have done lots of daytrips and some horseback riding too. It’s kind of that feeling that I’ve had no summer, but it’s mostly the terror that this is all the rest of my life will be — work and sleep. *sigh* I need to get out of this rut… starting with the blog! Things to look forward to on the blog: yarn I bought this weekend 2 book reviews photos from the summer and Henry

Stitches of the Heart

heart1

This cloth has been quite laborious to finish. I started it when I was doing the review of Lace Knitting To Go by Andrea Tung. I had wanted to try a few different stitches to give a better review but just lost momentum. I have brought this project to numerous meetups (as Chelle and Julia can attest to) but would lose count of stitches, or my place in the pattern, etc. So last night I finally sat down with some C.S.I. on DVD and finished up this bad boy. You can see one of my meetup errors if you look closely (a missed sk2p). Pattern: “Valentine” from Lace Knitting To Go by Andrea Tung Needles: 5.0mm bamboo Clovers Yarn: Bernat Handicrafter 100% cotton Finished size: 10″ wide x 8″ tall (huge compared to what it looked like on the pattern card) Visit my Ravelry Project page for more details. Baby on the Way

babybooties5

Did I scare you? Actually, the expecting mother is my mom’s best friend’s step-daughter. Because my mom’s best friend is also my godmother, we are actually close. And although I don’t know the expecting mother, I thought it would be fun to knit some baby booties! Pattern: Saartje’s Baby Booties Yarn: random acyrlic Needes: 3mm (random metal ones) Buttons: bought from ButtonButton Visit my Ravelry Project Page for more photos and details Since I’ll probably never see the booties on the baby, I needed a model:
