Mister Loyalty

loyalhenry1

This weekend I moved about 85% of my belongings to the new apartment. However, Henry and Chico will be the very last to move. While I was packing and loading the van, we had Henry locked in my parents’ room across the hall; he was hiding under the bed due to the noise. But I wasn’t worried about him — we weren’t leaving quite yet as the apartment is about 90% renovated. I grabbed an extra mattress and plopped it on the floor with my sleeping bag, and Henry settled in quite comfortably. His loyalty reminds me a little bit of a dog being “man’s best friend”. This last one is my favourite. Pure relaxation.

CBC Canada Reads and The Book of Negroes (book review)

canada-reads-09

I was a little late on the whole Canada Reads debate due to how busy life has been these past couple of months. But fortunately CBC Radio is magnificent about having Podcasts available. I got to listen to the debates during and after reading The Book of Negroes, and it made the Podcasts even more compelling when I could agree or disagree with the arguments. In the end, The Book of Negroes was named Canada Reads winner 2009. Canada Reads is CBC’s annual literature competition, with a few twists. 1. the books can be published any year (not just the most recent year like many book awards) as long as they’re written by a Canadian; 2. the judges are well-known Canadians who will debate and voice their opinions on the air; and 3. the debates take place over one week and the judges have to vote a book out of the running each day. Now that the debates for CBC Canada Reads 2009 are over, there is an online Canada Reads Book Club taking place with contests, forums and all that good stuff. I picked up The Book of Negroes at our BookCrossing Meetup. I grabbed it rather anxiously as I was really interested in reading it. Through BookCrossing, you tag your books with a special ID number and then release them “into the wild”. Then when someone picks it up, they can go online and help track the book’s journey. The Book of Negroes was a fantastic read; it [...]

Declutter FAIL

declutter-spring-challenge09

How is the Declutter Challenge going for you? With only a month left, I am failing miserably. I thought that moving would be the perfect opportunity to declutter. I’ve never moved house before and I’ve been in the same bedroom for 21 years. Well, instead of throwing useless things out and donating unused items… I find myself going on CraigsList and adopting other people’s declutter items. Why? Because I am moving into a one-bedroom apartment and have nothing of my own for the kitchen and household. I needed utensils, plates, pots and pans, vacuum cleaner, mop, broom, all that kind of general “communal” stuff that you find in your house. So a couple weekends ago, I picked up 4 boxes of stuff and several pieces of furniture from a lady who was moving to Ontario. She needed to get rid of it, I wanted to keep it… win-win situation which didn’t cost me a dime (except for gas). Unfortunately I don’t have pictures… I do have lots of the renovation but they’re on my laptop and I’m at work (bad Monica!). So you’ll have to take my word for it — the apartment is chaos. We’re painting, renovating, getting new carpets, re-tiling the bathroom — pure chaos. And I just keep collecting things like a packrat! So far I am Declutter FAIL… but the Declutter Challenge Blog is being updated! How are things going for you?

If you’re on Twitter, #buyindieday is a little hard to ignore. If you’re not on Twitter, you may not be aware that May 1st is International Buy Indie Day. So make some time today to head on town to your local independent bookstore (or shop) and support your local businesses! Don’t know what indie stores are near you? Use the IndieBound store finder! Neat tool using your zip/postal code.
