Saturday Night Music

Here are the bands that I went to go see on Saturday night at Pub340 for St. Paddy’s Day Drunkfest (no joke, that’s what the show was called). Opening was Love for Money; this was the first time I heard them, and I really liked them! Co-headlining was Los Furios; a ska punk band that is just so much fun to dance and sing along with. I’ve seen them before and I really enjoy them. They used to let the female sing a lot more, but I prefer their style with her not on vocals prominently. And playing till three in the morning for their CD release party: The Dreadnoughts, a Celtic punk band with members from various locations across Canada who have now settled in Vancouver. Awesome guys, fantastic music to dance to!

Lace Knitting To Go (book review)

lace-knitting-to-go

You may or may not know that I’m not a big lace knitter, although I am in total awe of how beautiful it is. but that’s what’s so great about this little book (if you can call it that). Lace Knitting to Go by Andrea Tung is like a lace stitch dictionary… in a box. It’s a great (and sturdy) box with “25 lovely laces to use for edgings, embellishments, and more”. All the patterns come out in individual cards, and it’s very well designed — obvious to see what the stitch looks like, and then the instructions and details on the inside. I liked that the instructions came in both row-by-row, and chart form. They also listed a difficulty rating, but I didn’t find it very helpful (for the patterns I tried) as it just depends if you know how to knit into the backs of stitches, or do yarn overs, etc. Also, the abbreviations were only listed on the “intro” card which included stuff about the kit and all that. So when I grabbed needles, yarn, and a pattern literally To Go, I got stuck 4 rows in because I didn’t recognize an abbreviation. However, I really liked how they gave you the stitches plain and simple so that you could create something of your own. If you really enjoy lace-y goodness and want a stitch dictionary dedicated to just that, this is a great little box set. There was a good mix of lace-like stitches, really delicate [...]

Social Media Carnival – Blog Improvement Project

2009bip-update

All over the blogs participating in the Blog Improvement Project, I’ve been hearing about Social Media people use: Twitter, StumbleUpon, Technorati, LibraryThing, GoodReads, Shelfari, Ning networks such as NaBloPoMo or BookBlogs, LinkedIn, Facebook, Deli.cious, Digg, YouTube, Reddit, Flickr… really the list is endless. But I have decided to talk about the Social Media outlet that everyone is taking for granted: your blog. Because it is so easy to set up a free blog and run it, many people are unfamiliar with simple practices and habits that make blog surfing, reading, and commenting so much more enjoyable. Your blog is an aspect of social networking and you should not take for granted the small steps you can take to make it more connected. Buttons: Buttons should link to the blog/project/website it is about. When you put a button on your sidebar, or in a post such as here with the Blog Improvement Project button, if you click it, the button should link to the specific website about it. It is completely useless to have your image link to itself (so when you click, it just reloads the image in a new page). Not having a button link at all frustrates your visitors if they want to join in the challenge / along / carnival / blog. With most blog interfaces, all you need to do is click on the image so it is selected, and then click the link button on your blog template. Here are some great instructions to make [...]
