Excerpt from Barnacle Love

After posting my review and thoughts about Barnacle Love, I thought how I first felt hearing about the book. I thought, “okay, sounds interesting, but what’s so good about it?” And by the end of the book, I could answer my question: it was the writing. So I spoke to the publisher about posting an excerpt. I got the approval to post this, so here you go, from Anthony De Sa’s book, Barnacle Love: ——————————– TERRA NOVA For nothing is fixed, forever and forever and forever, it is not fixed; the earth is always shifting, the light is always changing, the sea does not cease to grind down rock. Generations do not cease to be born, and we are responsible to them because we are the only witnesses they have. The sea rises, the light fails, lovers cling to each other, and children cling to us. The moment we cease to hold each other, the sea engulfs us and the light goes out. James Baldwin ~ OF GOD AND COD ~ There is nothing he can do. He is lifted high into the air by the swells that roll, break, and crash upon themselves. His dory is smashed, the flotsam scattered: pieces of white jagged wood afloat, tangled in knotted rope, nothing much to grab hold of before the ocean lifts him higher, only to drop him into its turbulent waters, catching him in the current. Again, he pierces the surface, the biting cold filling his lungs as he coughs [...]

Sassafrass Poses

sasspose1

My week has been a bit rushed so far (juggling work & personal & school & fun) so here is a late Whiskers on Wednesday. I tried to get some photos of Sassafrass (my sister’s kitten) in some of her funny poses. Unfortunately my sister wasn’t feeling well so we didn’t get that many shots to choose from. This is called “Perfect Specimen” “Armrest Kitty” or as LOLCatz calls it, “monorail cat” Monorail meets Henry

Mini-Maylee

minimaylee1

I delivered my spoilee’s cocoa package on Saturday… and so I can finally share photos of the Blah Buster Buddy I made. Unfortunately Chelle is feeling very under the weather so I don’t expect she’s blogged about the package yet… but keep your eyes peeled. I had so much fun spoiling her because I know her IRL! It was sooo hard to keep it a secret and I ended up having to gush to other knitters we both know! Hahha. Thanks for keeping the secret safe Julia & Kerry Ann! Anyway, here are some photos I took of Mini-Maylee before she went to live with Chelle (and the real Maylee)! [Ravelry Project Page] Maylee found the box [Saturday] night around 11 pm when I was taking her out for her last reliefing of the day. I love everything and Mini-Maylee… Maylee licked Mini on the face a few times it was sooo cute.

Barnacle Love by Anthony De Sa (book review)

barnaclelove

I wanted to read this book because the author, Anthony De Sa, is a Canadian and the book got shortlisted for the Scotiabank Giller Prize 2008. Unfortunately it didn’t win, but it was an interesting read. Barnacle Love is about a young Portuguese man who dreams of living in Canada. Canada is the land of dreams, and Portugal holds only what his mother envisioned for his life. When he finally achieves that dream, we jump ahead and see the story from his son’s perspective. As we watch the father through the son’s eyes, we see that the father did not get everything he wanted from life. As he becomes bitter, he drinks, and soon the son is struggling to live his dreams beneath the weight of his father’s personal destruction. I had trouble determining how I felt about this book. It’s certainly well-written and compelling, but it wasn’t plot driven. It felt more like a tale or series of short stories woven together to form a novel. It was really unique to see Canada through the eyes of an immigrant and a first-generation Canadian. The language barrier and conflicting feelings the characters felt regarding their heritage was something I’ve never experienced. I really enjoyed how this book “showed” instead of just “told”, as my English teacher would say; the book didn’t tell you that the son was ashamed of his father’s drinking problem, but instead showed it in the son’s actions, words, and other details. Anthony De Sa really captured [...]

Blog Improvement Project: Week 3 [Types of Posts]

This week was all about the different types of posts we write: links, reviews, how-to’s, long, short, etc. Now, I admit to being a one-topic-per-post kinda gal. That’s just the way I like things — organized and slightly obsessive. I’d rather do three small posts over the span of two days then mash all the topics into one post. I find that people spend less and less time actually reading on the internet and just skimming. Therefore, I feel that shorter posts, straight-to-the-point topics, and smaller paragraphs lend well to the skimming style. Kim posted several links about types of blog posts; some boiled the points down to just five styles, others detailed as many as 20 types of posts. Kim made a list of 10 for “Blog Post Bingo” for the Blog Improvement Project this week. We were to try to post as many different types of blog posts in an effort to mix up our styles and see if anything new worked well for us. Surprisingly, I managed to do a few of these without realizing it. A Link Post – I wrapped up the Throw Away 50 Things challenge…. on the Declutter Blog! (does that count?) A Short Post – Just sharing a blog post that Dewey’s husband wrote A List Post – An unconventional list An Opinion Post – With only one year to go, I shared my thoughts on the 2010 Olympics A Poll or Question Post – Damn! wait just a couple more weeks [...]
