Friday Fill In #91

Pumpkin Pie, Halloween, and the smell of autumn air are some of the things I’m most looking forward to in October. Sometimes I just wanna scream. Don’t be afraid to try new things; and that’s why there is a saying, “never say never”! When I’m down, I just want to talk to that one special person who will say the right thing to make it all better.. At a computer screen, or in bed (aka the majority of my bedroom space) is where you’ll find me most often. A rainy day is good for reading by the fire, or going for a nice walk. And as for the weekend, tonight I’m looking forward to sleeeeeeep, tomorrow my plans include setting up for the Festival and Sunday, I want to have a great day at The Word on the Street Vancouver!

Getting the Girl by Susan Juby (book review)

gettingthegirl

Do any other readers have trouble at the beginning of a book establishing the speaker’s gender? I always seem to immediately assume the speaker is a female — but Getting the Girl by Susan Juby is narrated by Sherman Mack, a ninth grader at Harewood Technical School. He’s just started High School, and as he lusts over a new friend Dini, his best friend Vanessa (and all the other girls at Harewood) are terrified of being Defiled. No, we’re not talking about sexual molestation, we’re talking about social alienation. Every so often a girl’s picture shows up on the mirrors of the bathroom with a D for “defiled” written on it. Then the rumours start, and eventually everyone starts ignoring her — the Defiled become invisible. When Dini starts going out with Lester (a popular lacrosse player, affectionately nicknamed “Lester the Molester”), Sherman takes it upon himself to protect her. When he ends up just making an utter fool of himself, Vanessa suggests that he investigate the Defilings and stop them. Sherman agrees thinking that if he uncovers the Defilers and save Dini from social alienation, he’ll win her affection. However, it gets much more complicated than that, and much more dangerous… can boys get Defiled? The social commentary in this book is very strong. It shows how just a small rumour or embarrassing photo can get out of hand very quickly. I think that this is an important element to the book, and if a class was to study [...]

Just Plain Weird

What was the most unusual (for you) book you ever read? Either because the book itself was completely from out in left field somewhere, or was a genre you never read, or was the only book available on a long flight… whatever? What (not counting school textbooks, though literature read for classes counts) was furthest outside your usual comfort zone/familiar territory? And, did you like it? Did it stretch your boundaries? Did you shut it with a shudder the instant you were done? Did it make you think? Have nightmares? Kick off a new obsession? I definitely found H.G. Wells’ War of the Worlds to be really odd. I’m just not much of a sci-fi person, and I’m sure the radio version was totally shocking, and I might enjoy an audio version of the book… but I really couldn’t get into it. I read the first chapter twice, and the first few pages several different times; I just couldn’t get into it. Alice Sebold is definitely an unsual writer. Her subject matter is not in any of the standard conventions — I’ve never read a story through the eyes of a girl who was raped and murdered (Lovely Bones). Then Lucky just blew me away — first person rape victim, Alice Sebold’s own story. And more recently, Almost Moon, a story written in first person about a woman who kills her ailing mother because she’s just had enough. In terms of language and style, the first time I picked up [...]

No Knitting. Pay attention to ME!

henry_calorimetry

You cannot resist him… even when he holds your knitting captive! The only thing that changes that, is about 4 minutes later, when I came back from the washroom, a bunch of stitches were coming off the needles. He was a little too excited. And it’s not even the yarn he’s interested in! He likes the needles — chewing on them. He also likes chewing on pens. Go figure! The only yarn he absolutely loves in 100% wool and hemp. Weird kitty.
