The Jane Austen Book Club by Karen Joy Fowler (book review)

I finished this sometime last week, which seems like ages ago, but with starting my new job (yay!) and the lovely weekend (photos soon), I simply forgot to write this up (oops). It was not for the dislike of the novel — not at all! In fact, I really enjoyed this book. It is a very well-written novel by Karen Joy Fowler following the lives of six bibliophiles, five of who are already Austin-addicts. You don’t have to have read any of Austen’s novels to follow the book, which was good for me, because it mainly follows the characters in the bookclub itself. I really enjoyed the exploration into the six different characters, their connections, and their attitudes to one another. It was refreshing that they didn’t get along “happy-go-lucky” because that is rarely the case in a social situation. The novel mentions the characters’ idiosyncrasies, annoyances, and habits which really develop well-rounded characters. Very fulfilling. My only complaint is it is written in a Third Person narrative: “There were six of us“, “We gathered Thursday”… etc. But never is it explained who the narrator is, and you can’t infer from them saying “I” or “me” because they never do. It’s like they want us to feel a part of the bookclub, but in the beginning it really bugged me because I felt like I was missing a character! If you’re in the same boat as me and haven’t read any Austen, you’re going to really want to after this! [...]

Upcoming Read-a-thon!

A while back I mentioned an interest in doing the 24-hour Read-a-thon. I think I may participate in my own way, but I won’t be able to manage it on the weekend in question (next weekend!). However, if YOU are inclined to join up… Please tell them I sent you!! There is a big contest going on over at the Read-a-thon host’s blog.

Flavourful Writing

Think about your favorite authors, your favorite books . . . what is it about them that makes you love them above all the other authors you’ve read? The stories? The characters? The way they appear to relish the taste of words on the tongue? The way they’re unafraid to show the nitty-gritty of life? How they sweep you off to a new, distant place? Q: What is it about those books and authors that makes them resonate with you in ways that other, perfectly good books and authors do not? Definitely the writing style & the subject matter. I know I mainly write about fiction, but that’s because I mainly read fiction, or, I prefer to read fiction for enjoyment purposes. ERG! Something about these Booking Through Thursday questions all sound the same! I almost don’t feel like justifying WHY I like something… I just do! The story is interesting … or different … or exciting … or enticing. But it may not be to other people. I like authors that “flow” – the story isn’t stopped with too many side notes or interuptions. I couldn’t read Jonathan Strange and Mister Norrell by Susanna Clarke because there were footnotes and historical (fake) deviations and it just made me loose track of the story! I also like the language of certain authors, such as J.D. Salinger. Actually, J.D. Salinger is the only author I like who does “string-of-consciousness” type writing. And I also love the language of William Shakespeare. Although, [...]

Friday Fill-In #77

1. A smile is “hello” in any language. 2. Speed is my favorite board or card game. 3. I would love to have more sleep & hours in the day in my life and less early mornings. 4. When I think of the Summer Solstice, I think of calendars. 5. I just remembered I need to shave my legs. 6. One of my favorite song lyrics goes like this: I can’t help my feelings, I’ll go out of my mind These players come to get me ’cause they’d like my behind. 7. And as for the weekend, tonight I’m looking forward to babysitting my neighbours & CW coming into Vancouver, tomorrow my plans include a surprise from CW for our 3 year anniversary (early celebration) and Sunday, I want to … maybe attend Greek Day on Broadway… however, CW’s surprise takes precedent over the weekend!
