Spring Fling Coffee

Anne is hosting another Coffee Swap (I really wanted to participate in the Winter Wonderland Coffee Swap but didn’t because I moved to England in November 2007)… this time it’s the SPRING FLING COFFEE SWAP and sign-ups open March 20th. Help spread the word and get entered in the contest! I made some buttons for the swap and sent them to Anne. Not sure if she wanted some “easter” theme ones… but I thought I’d throw them in for her perusal anyway.

Hardcover or Paperback?

This week’s topic for Booking Through Thursday is… All other things (like price and storage space) being equal, given a choice in a perfect world, would you rather have paperbacks in your library? Or hardcovers? And why? Ooo… this is difficult! For reading in bed I do prefer paperbacks just for ease of reading. However, for collections and series (Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, Sword of Truth) I like to have hardbacks because the collection is for long-time keeps. That being said, I’m not necessarily picky if I’m looking for a book (specific or not); I like to read the books and keep every book I buy.

UK Topic of the Week #6: Swapping

Q: Have you done a swap before (doesn’t have to be a knitting swap)? What do you like best about swapping? Are there any personal “requirements” that a swap has to have before you will join? I’ve done knitting swaps before. My first was the Knitter’s Virtual Vacation Swap and I got to “visit” Boston. I sent someone from France to Vancouver. It was more fun putting the package together than receiving one. And I’m sorry again Jessi if I was a pain! Personal requirements for a swap are pretty low… but I’ve not joined any of the Secret Pals because the requirements of involvement are pretty high. This is a personal thing but if I host another swap, blogs are definitely going to be a requirement; they were at the beginning of the swap, but some people didn’t like that on Ravelry so I changed it. We only have 3 blogless participants so I really don’t think it’s that big a thing. Blogs are super important when “stalking” your partner. ————————————————— P.S. I might be a little MIA this weekend as we’ve got friends from Manchester visiting us here in London. Today we’re going to the London Zoo… sound familiar?

Caffeine Talk

Michelle and Chan have been talking about coffee on their blogs, and it has got me thinking… I want my Starbucks Caramel Macchiato!! But I gave up coffee for Lent. First time doing the Lent thing, my boyfriend gives up chocolate every year. I started drinking tea when I was 6, more milk than tea really. I started drinking coffee when I was 12, more sugar and half-and-half than coffee. I still like milky tea and creamy coffee, but my sugar is curbed. My dad grew up with a British mom so he started us on tea young (Orange Pekoe)… then the coffee smells just got to me. During high school I mixed the two – tea in the morning and coffee after school with friends. I fell in love with Starbucks (the convenience and the consistency of taste more than the corporate company). I do like Blenz’s hot chocolates better than Starbucks, and Tim Horton’s Iced Caps are great. With the convenience came customization – mochas, fraps, macchiatos, flavoured lattes… mmm! Then I started to notice my stomach always hurt when I drank coffee *cries*… and now I can’t have it daily. *cries some more* Now at Starbucks if I can tell my stomach won’t be able to handle a coffee, I have a Chai Tea Latte, no water. If I’m thirsty, my regular black tea with milk and sugar doesn’t help, so I usually have a glass of juice and water while the kettle boils. I drink 3 [...]

The Inside Loop

The Inside Loop is a new online fibre arts magazine based in the UK. It is a mix between the Knitters Review with articles, essays, and interviews, and Knitty or MagKnits with free submitted patterns. The Inside Loop focuses on not just knitting, but also crochet, spinning, dying, historical techniques, and current interviews. The first issue has just gone live this week. Check it out, and if you’re in the UK, I suggest you look into submitting your own work.
