Unknown Novel

What’s your favorite book that nobody else has heard of?

Definitely “The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle” by Avi. This was my favourite childhood book with a 13-year-old female heroine on a pirate ship! She starts out on the ship to cross to America in 1832 with another family, who do not show up. She becomes one of the crew and they eventually mutany against him, but during the voyage she is accused of murder, brought to trial (proceeded by the Captain) and found guilty. I won’t spoil the ending, but it’s absolutely perfect! There is mystery and intrigue and pirates who aren’t as “bad” as they seem. It’s an amazing young-adult novel.

This is the old cover (1995) that I was always used to… still want a copy like this. I probably borrowed it like 17 times from my Elementary School library.

It was recently re-released (2005 hardcover), but I feel that the new illustrated cover doesn’t have the same “classic” or “period” feeling that the other one does.

This is the original 1990 cover.

When I used to work at a bookstore, that book frequently showed up on summer reading lists. And since it’s fairly slim, a lot of kids chose to read it. (Wouldn’t want to read anything lengthy, now, would we? ^.~) I’m glad to know that it’s a good book. Maybe one day I’ll read it, too. It does sound like the perfect “young adult” type of plot. And I love good YA books.

Oh my gosh! I loved that book! I’d forgotten about that one. I miss all my young adult type books. :-)

Thanks for all your book suggestions – I’m hoping to discover my local library after work tonight, so they’ll come in handy. Otherwise internet shopping me thinks. Don’t mind shocking at all, I think it was just the glorification of destroying a family in ‘chic lit’ that didn’t sit well with me.
